- TIMOTHY V CARSTENS says:EditNine birders walked the Big Bear section of the Greenway today. Participants were: Chris, Karen, Pam, Tess, Michael J., April, Renee, Rita and Tim. Bird activity was heavy when we started, tapered off during the middle of the walk and then increased again at the end of the walk. A highlight of the walk occurred when some of us returned to the wetland area behind the playground at the end of the walk to try and get a better look at the Swamp Sparrow that was seen when we first started. We didn’t get better looks at the Sparrow but we did find a Northern Waterthrush.
We ended up seeing 37 species of birds. They are listed in the eBird list below.
The last walk of the season will be at Salali Lane next Wednesday at 8:30Little Tennessee River Greenway

Participants were: Tess, Jean B Chris, Sally, Jean H, Ned, Wendy K, Don K, Brock Pam, Renee, Tom and Tim. There was fog when the walk began and bird activity was exceptionally slow though we did have a Great Egret in the marsh behind the playground. Activity did not pick up until we had walked almost to the end of the section. At that point we began seeing some mixed feeding flocks including some warblers. We had fleeting glimpses of fast-moving Chestnut-sided Warbler, American Redstart and Northern Parula through dense the foliage, as well as a good look at a down-low and in-the-open Eastern Wood Pewee. There were probably other Warblers in the flock but we were unable to get on them long enough to identify them. Despite the slow start, we eventually did find and identify 35 species of birds, not bad at all for a day that started very slow. 19 People and we started at the swamp by the playground finding Great Egrets, Green Herons, a Kingfisher eating a fish, Wood Ducks, Mallards, and a mystery white water bird (little Blue Heron?). The beaver pond is really dry so Chris was able to walk way out and discover a Wood Duck family with several young ones. Eventually we headed on down the greenway finding a good variety of birds. Our group was Pam H., Ned, Chris, Jean H., Michael and Debra, Richard Graham, George, Sally, Barbara and Francis, April, Don O’Neil, Marion, Jo, Jean W, Lynn Kroft, and myself. The group birded for around 20 minutes before rain interrupted. At this point, some of the group left in their cars while others went to a gazebo to look over the eBird list. That second group continued to bird from within the shelter of the gazebo for some time. Then the rain let up and the second group was able to continue the walk. We ended up observing 41 species of rain. But no photographs were taken due to continuing drizzle and threat that a heavier rain could start. We all had nice looks at a Chat at the beginning of the walk, a yellow warbler about half way through, and a male orchard oriole towards the end of the walk.

Conditions were foggy at first and many more birds were heard than seen. Towards the end of the walk, the sun did break through and it was a beautiful day. Our first Greenway walk of 2019 at the Library with 12 hearty birders on a 32 degree morning with a beautiful blue sky: Tim, Ned, Don F., Marsha, Chris, Rita, Tamara, Don and Wendy, Ginger and Mike, and Karen L.
We had several highlights; an Eastern Meadowlark on the top of a pole looking magnificent, watching the courtship display of a male and female Downy Woodpecker, close views of Rough-winged Swallows and Tree swallows, and seeing a pair of Savannah Sparrows.
